In Maya architecture, square and round forms were used for many reasons, aesthetic, functional and symbolic alike. The Maya base their architecture on sacred geometry, which they associate with the scales of a serpent.

Their knowledge of mathematics and geometry, in particular, rested on precise and thorough observation of nature and its forms. The intention was to create a balance between enduring essence and the environment.
