Maya rulers used the jaguar as a symbol of the divine right of kings. The Jaguar God dwelled in the Underworld, the home of the dead. Every morning he became the Sun God and traveled across the sky, westward, where he fell back into the World Below.

Like the Jaguar God, Maya kings defied death by being reborn out of the Underworld.
